Course Descriptions

 

Algebra I CP   A one-year course covering the California State Standards for Algebra 1.  Placement of 9th graders is determined by a student’s score on a district-wide multi-measure placement matrix for Algebra I.  (Algebra I is a required course for high school graduation.)                                   

Geometry CP   A one-year course covering the California State Standards for Geometry with an emphasis on problem solving, logical thinking and formal proofs.   Topics include congruency, similarity, area, volume, and trigonometry.    Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation and a grade of C or better in Algebra I.

Algebra 2 CP  A one-year course covering the   California State Standards for Algebra 2.  Topics include logarithms, exponential and rational functions, probability and basic statistics.    Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation and a grade of C or better in Algebra 1 and Geometry.

Advanced Algebra 2  A fast-paced course covering the California State Standards for Algebra 2,   emphasizing rigor in problem solving and critical thinking.      Students are encouraged to become independent learners.  Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation and a grade of B or better in Algebra I and Geometry.

Pre-Calculus CP  A standards-based course in analytic geometry, mathematical analysis and discrete mathematics which emphasizes technology, critical thinking, and applications.  A graphing calculator is highly recommended.    Prerequisite:  Algebra 2 CP with a grade of C or better.

Honors Pre-Calculus  A fast-paced, standards-based, rigorous course in analytic geometry,  mathematical analysis and discrete mathematics emphasizing technology, critical thinking, and applications.  A graphing calculator is highly recommended.  Prerequisite:  Advanced Algebra 2 with a grade of B or better.

Statistics  CP  Statistics with Technology is an activity centered course where students develop an understanding of the principles and practices of Statistics, based upon guided activities, not lecture.    Prerequisite:  Algebra 2 CP with a grade of C or better.

AP Statistics  A fast-paced, rigorous activity- centered course emphasizing a non-calculus introduction to statistics. Students are required to take the AP exam in May.  Prerequisite:  Advanced Algebra 2 with a grade of B or better, or teacher recommendation.

Calculus CP  Calculus CP is a one-year medium-paced course aligned with the California State Standards for Calculus.  Calculus P is an application based course intended as preparation for applied calculus college courses.  Topics include limits,  differentiation, and integration.  A  graphing calculator is highly recommended.    Prerequisite:  Pre-Calculus CP with a grade of C or better.

AP  Calculus AB   Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB is a theory based course covering differential and integral calculus.  It is approximately equivalent to 2/3 of the first year of a theoretical calculus college course.  A graphing calculator is required.  Students must take the AP exam in May.   Prerequisite:  Honors Pre-Calculus with a grade of C or better, or teacher recommendation.

AP  Calculus BC   Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus BC is a theory based course covering all the AB topics as well as additional topics including series and sequences.  It is  It is approximately equivalent to the first year of a theoretical calculus college course.  Students are expected to be familiar with the Calculus AB content since the AB content will be taught as a review only.  A graphing calculator is required.  Students must take the AP exam May.     Prerequisite:  AP Calculus AB with a grade of C or better, or teacher recommendation.
